Cosmo Cater – Xprss Lane 2026-7

Have a listen to the most recent episode of Xprss Lane, by Brisbane’s Cosmo Cater. He is supporting Dutchman Eelke Kleijn this Sunday on the WET Deck at W Brisbane, for Lemon & Lime.

Cosmo Cater

Around Brisbane/Meanjin DJ circles, Cosmo Cater is somewhat of a Jedi Knight. Accomplished, calm, methodical… and deadly.

Cutting his teeth on a steady diet of house and techno vinyl in the late 90s, Cosmo built up an enviable record of club and festival slots through the 2000s and forged his own path, playing everything from disco through house, breaks, techno and trance. He held down a bunch of residencies and made sure his technical and musical prowess spoke for him.

It was the warm-up slot though, that became Cosmo’s own. There are very few club identities for whom he hasn’t respectfully and dilgently warmed up (Sasha, Deadmau5, Chemical Brothers, Orbital, John Digweed to name a few), and the world’s best comfortably sing his praises when they tour Brisbane and have Cosmo lay the groundwork for an unforgettable night.

Throughout his career, Cosmo has given back an incredible amount to Brisbane’s vibrant dance culture, as an esteemed print and online journalist for Scene, Inthemix, 3DWorld and more, right hand man for premier league promotional outfit Auditree and mentor to the next generation of Brisbane’s best DJs. The young lad who began handing out flyers and working nightclub doors, eventually graduated to the turntables, media, recording studios – far beyond his humble beginnings.

The past few years have seen a string of tasteful support slots for some of the coolest cats in dance music, including Bicep, Dixon, Kolsch, Green Velvet, Ame, Eats Everything, Nina Kraviz, Eelke Kleijn, Dubfire, Yotto, Huxley, Tensnake, Todd Terje, Eric Prydz aka Cirez D, as well as resuming his consistent record of setting up Sasha for success. He’s continued to make his sets stand apart with tailor made reedits of new and classic tunes.

The ‘progressive’ sound of the early-mid 2000s is a sound inextricably linked with Cosmo, but these days the sound of Cosmo Cater is different yet retains similar elements – it is groovy, warm, melodic and inviting. It is pointless to resist.

List of notable supports: Orbital, Sasha, Deadmau5, Carl Cox, Chemical Brothers, John Digweed, Skream, Eats Everything, Carl Craig, Tensnake, Chicane, Claude Von Stroke, Joris Voorn, Dubfire, Tod Terje, Julio Bashmore, Bicep, Hernan Cattaneo, H.O.S.H, Derrick May, Green Velvet, Nina Kraviz, Todd Terry, Danny Howells, Nick Warren, Dave Seaman, James Holden, Desyn Masiello

When asked about the latest Xprss Lane set, and his forthcoming gig for Lemon & Lime, Cosmo had the following to say:

Regarding the mix, I mixed it back in July and that seems like ages ago! I am happy with the mix as it represents a blend of sounds and styles that I am into over two and half hours. Originally the mix was meant to be 90 minutes long, however I was enjoying it too much, so continued and I landed on something combining tracks both brand new and even some that are twenty years old. The challenge was to keep the groove rolling yet not keep building in a linear fashion to one peak. There are multiple peaks within this set and many twists and turns. You get a lush start, lots of basslines and rolling percussion to make you move and then eventually, a full vocal resolution to bring the matter to a conclusion. As I mentioned, there's tracks from 2026, 2011, 2006 and more. There's even a tune or two that have now blown up due to being heavily featured in the soccer world cup!

My sets have always provided a nod to the lesser-known past of dance music and re-contextualised those tunes for today, as well as searching out the freshest new music of today. It's far from 'perfect', but sometimes perfect is the enemy of good. Let me be very clear though: these are mostly not the kind of tracks that you'll hear in a warm up set from me. My warm up sets are about setting the mood and vibes for the main act. It's always a privilege and great responsibility to continue being asked to warm up for guys like Sasha and the rest, and I take that responsibility very seriously.

As far as this weekend goes, I am really looking forward to supporting Eelke Kleijn again. I last warmed up for him in 2023 and am also a big fan of his production work, so it's an honour to be asked to warm up for him again in 2026. It's a fantastic line-up overall at a cool venue put on by a quality promotional outfit in Lemon and Lime.
