Dwayne K – Resurgence at Sub Rosa Brisbane

A regular in the Brisbane underground scene in years gone by, Dwayne K, also known as Tilt, is supporting Italy’s CIOZ this Sunday at QUIVR. Have a listen to this 90-minute closing set he played when headlining at Sub Rosa many moons ago, which features a bunch of music by CIOZ.

Long before Dwayne K stepped behind the decks, house music was already part of his language. Growing up in South Africa in the 1990s, he was surrounded by the deep, soulful and jazzy house his parents loved: music that could shift the energy of a room and bring people together without a word. Now based between Brisbane and the Gold Coast, he performs as Tilt.

Behind the decks since 2007, Tilt’s sound is rooted in the underground: progressive, deep, driving and melodic, with enough groove to make standing still difficult. Each set is shaped as a journey, unfolding through patient builds, emotional lift and a touch of the twisted and unpredictable.

His experience spans theatres, open-air and daytime events, boat parties and dark nightclubs, across local line-ups and supports for international artists. From opening and warm-up duties through to peak-time and closing sets, Tilt brings a strong instinct for reading the crowd, controlling the energy and giving each moment what it needs.

At the centre of every set is connection. The exchange between DJ and dancefloor is what drives him, using music as a shared emotional language to create moments people can genuinely feel, connect with and lose themselves in.

A little throwback ahead of a very special gig this Sunday. ❤️

This weekend I'll be supporting Cioz at Summer Loop, an artist I've admired for years and whose music has been a regular feature in my sets for a long time.

It got me thinking about this particular night back in 2021, when I played one of my last closing sets at the beloved Sub Rosa in Brisbane. I had a fair few Cioz tracks in the bag that night, so it feels pretty fitting to finally give this recording a home on SoundCloud ahead of sharing the decks with the man himself.

For those who remember Sub Rosa, you'll know how special that place was. This was one of those nights where everything just came together. I played from 1:30am until 3am, the dancefloor was absolutely heaving, and the energy didn't let up until the lights came on.

Full disclosure, some of the mixing is a little rough around the edges, but the atmosphere more than made up for it. Sometimes it's not about playing the technically perfect set, it's about the moments you share with the dancefloor. This was definitely one of those nights.

Fun fact: I'd accidentally double-booked myself at a warehouse party that same evening. So I started there, made my way to Sub Rosa for this set, then headed back to the warehouse and partied until sunrise. An absolutely bonkers night and one I'll never forget.

Sadly, a couple of planned closing sets after this never went ahead thanks to COVID, and Sub Rosa eventually became another chapter in Brisbane's nightlife history.

Five years later, listening back to this brings back a lot of memories. The music, the people, the energy and a place that felt like a second home.
