Mill7 – Always / Acid Shoey [Domino FX]

Brisbane techno label Domino FX has hit the ground running after launching in April 2023 with a compilation called Chapter One. Already on their seventh release, Brisbane’s Mill7 has produced a two track EP – Always / Acid Shoey, which reached #4 on Beatport’s Techno (Peak Time / Driving) Releases and #36 on the Beatport Top 100 Releases. It is the artist’s second release on the label, following on from June’s Dream / Nightmare.

Always has punctuating keys as the driving beat rolls along, with vocal samples throughout and claps echoing in stereo. The Domino FX liner notes read:

The pleasant techy roller 'Always' transports the listener on a voyage through the history of house music with a modern touch. The vocals, which are drowned in reverb, are layered with pounding metallic percussion, shimmering high rides, and straight-up old-school chords in the main beat, which is sure to make dance floors sweat like they did in the 1990s.

Acid Shoey gets it moving with an ascending acid line and persistent percussion, accompanied by appropriate vocal clips. Domino FX on the description:

'Acid shoey', the second song, does exactly what it says on the tin. Everyone's favourite 303 sound, mesmerising vocal loops and washed-out reverb high end all feature heavily. By building tension and releasing the fury on the second drop, Mill7 is able to transport us on a journey that takes the mood from intensely hammering to complete devastation. When people need a boost, an acid shoey is the only acceptable response.

Mill7 had this to say about the release of the record:

First of all I would just like to thank Doug Brennan (Domino FX head honcho), as none of this would be possible without his courage and persistence with the scene and the label. He helps everyone where he can, so it is an absolute pleasure to work with him.

I really did not think that the EP would do so well. When I first sent it to Doug, he loved it and wanted to sign it right away. He always helps me tweak little things here and there to get it up to scratch and he said this one did not need too much done to it, which I was really happy about. By no means did I think it would chart or go to where it did, obviously I was over the moon when it started to rise and once it got in the top ten of the Techno Peak Time releases, I was honestly blown away. From the bottom of my heart, I thank everyone who bought listened and shared it around. It made it to #4, which just blows my mind.

Domino FX as a whole is going from strength to strength and the tracks and artists I get to mingle with and hear on a daily basis make me so proud. I can honestly feel the love and the family vibe. We all support each other and each other's music. Just glad to be part of it to be honest.

We couldn't be happier nor prouder of Mill7 with his latest release on Domino FX. The EP reached #4 on Beatport's Techno (Peak Time / Driving) Releases and #36 on the Beatport Top 100 Releases.

When Paul sent me the initial demo for 'Always' I was blown away by the creativity and aptitude regarding the genre. Including old skool sounds and techniques with a modern twist is exactly what we're after. The track is a lot faster than his previous releases on the label so you could say I was pleasantly surprised, as this was our first release faster than 136BPM. There's a big shift happening in the techno scene at the moment and punters are after harder, faster sounds. As a longtime lover of harder styles, I couldn't be happier about it.

In the last couple of months at Domino FX we have been working on our reach so that we can get our music in front of key DJs, radio shows and influential people. We have partnered up with a reputable promotions agency which has been fantastic in spreading the word about our label.

What's next for Domino FX you may be thinking? I won't completely let the cat out of the bag, but I will say that we have a new artist signing to the label next month, additionally we are organising a remixes compilation album and are planning our next event. We will continue to work with up-and-coming artists not just locally but internationally too. We can't wait to see what the future has in store for us, and with amazing producers like Mill7 on our team we are destined for success.
