Three Questions – D-sens

On a rainy ANZAC Day in Brisbane at Easy Times Brewing Co, Melbourne-based Frenchman, D-sens, played a three-hour set for Fallen To Sound. John William Daly, from Down Under Sound, got to ask him three questions after his gig.

Mat aka D-sens is an electronic music producer evolving across many artistic projects for decades.

D-sens is main musical project and Dj moniker, spread on stage a wide spectrum of deep progressive and technoid hypnotic beats blended with lots of love, warm energies, smiles and a little bit of acid twist.

He recently had the honour of presenting a studio mix for the infamous Balance series and one of his latest releases on D-nox’s label Sprout records hit the chart on beatport by reaching n°1 on Progressive house house and Indie Dance best releases with his EP Le Pic des Âmes.

Hailing from the 90’s Electronic French scene, Matt is now a Melbourne local by heart. His productions and unique dj style offered him to play over the world for the past 20 years…From the dusty desert of Burning Man to the ash and dry Rainbow serpent, high tech Japanese Ageha club, across good ol Europe and tasteful Asia, all those years behind the decks made him an highly accomplished Dj producer.

Counting more than fifty original and remixes, his productions are featured on labels like Armin Van Buuren’s Arva, OPIUO’s own imprint Slurp music, Phunk Investigation’s Miniatures records [it], Pena’s Flow rec [pt], French techno NCTRN rec, Baroque rec [en], Open records [australia], Sweep 181, Beef rec [chezch], on his own Bus records, Pure perception [usa], VP rec [israel], Stargate rec [japan], Rococo rec [germany]…and so many more

He is also an accomplished studio and live sound engineer following an international career as FOH and production manager, touring the world supporting the like of OPIUO and DUB-FX, you will find him operating at some of the most prestigious venues and festivals around the world.

Recorded live during the Fallen to Sound - ANZAC Day Event , this special 3-hour live performance by D-SENS captured the magic of an afternoon that flowed effortlessly from sunshine into sunset.

Combining deep melodic textures, progressive rhythms and hypnotic sounds, D-SENS crafted a journey that was both powerful and immersive. The set opens with uplifting energy with some Clarinet from Apro , drawing the crowd together before gradually unfolding into deeper, more emotional sounds. Every transition builds with purpose, creating moments of tension, release and pure connection on the dancefloor.

INTERVIEW

G’day D-sens, I am John William Daly, from Down Under Sound. A pleasure to meet you.

D-sens:

Pleasure to meet you too.

Thank you for playing an extended three hour set here at Easy Times Brewing Co, courtesy of Fallen To Sound. How do you feel after the set and what were some highlights?

D-sens:

I feel amazing. It was pretty close to three hours. It's massive, but I had such a ball. I don't even exactly remember what I played. I was at some point in kind of a trance and connected with the crowd, and after an hour or something, I left my head, and those people dancing and who were just in the zone, it was beautiful. It's been a great journey. I don't really have my eyes to hold. I would have to read when I record it, so I'm going to listen. But to me, that was just a nice connection with people and they inspired me when I played. So I would find out, but I think that was good.

So you’re originally from France…

D-sens:

Correct.

But have made your home in Melbourne, Australia. What is it about the place that has made you want to stay?

D-sens:

Well, I discovered Australia in 2001. I came and played for an Eclipse festival in the desert, and it was a completely transformational experience. As soon as I did Melbourne, I felt home. I made so many friends that felt like family. I really felt like home. And since that, I kept coming back and coming back and I was just feeling good here. My music was feeling good. My dad told me that I was looking like I was really alive when I was in Australia. Yeah, and I just felt like home, so it's just a natural progression, a natural feeling for me to come here and base myself. And it just happened naturally.

Recently, you played at a classic Aussie festival, Rabbits Eat Lettuce, in Texas, a town in the sunshine state of Queensland. Now you’re in the state capital, Brisbane. Do you have any other local gigs coming up that you are looking forward to, or will you be jetting off to play overseas?

D-sens:

Well, to be frankly honest, I mix not so much anymore because I also work at Auldus Festival as production manager and sound engineer. So now I think I gave back Auldus 20 years plus, 30 years of it, of touring and experience to the scene have been more useful. But I think some gigs when like Earth Frequency, Rabbits, Dragon Dreaming, they always offer me a nice set that is meaningful. So I'm not really looking for bookings. And when this one pop also, they offer me three hours. It means something. So that's all really drive me. I've played for so many years, so many gigs in so many countries that now it's more like when something's coming to me and it's meaningful and I know I'm going to be able to play my music and experience something with the crowd, then I'm up for it, but I'm not taking much gigs.

Thank you so much for having me, and one little word. I remember when I first came in Australia, a lot of people were saying that, oh, what's coming from Europe is fresher and stuff. I always believed that Australia was forefront for the electronic music, and it's always inspired me because here there is people who create music and deliver it to the world. And when you really look carefully, there is a lot of Aussie music everywhere in the world, and it's an amazing, really fresh, inspirational country. Thank you, guys.
