Ya Girl Natasha presents Meme School Album Launch
An emerging producer and DJ residing in Brisbane, Ya Girl Natasha is curating a colourful launch event for her new album. It’s all happening at echo&bounce in Woolloongabba this Friday 6 March.
Ya Girl Natasha is an Electronic composer and DJ hailing from Brisbane (Meanjin), Australia. Known for her eclectic style and unique soundscapes, she has made her mark in the scene by merging diverse influences – from Death Grips, Machine Girl and The Clash, to the likes of Four Tet, Aphex Twin, Moby and Enya.
Her musical journey started off with singing during her childhood, but by 19 she had turned her focus to DJing, intrigued by its endless creative possibilities. Since making her public DJ debut in 2018, she has played a multitude of genres across several local and international venues, including a brief stint on Leeds Student Radio in England.
Her path in music production wasn’t as straightforward, however. After years of what she describes as “creative constipation”, it was the loss of a parent in her mid-20s that catalysed a long period of introspection and discovery, which encouraged her to refine a more authentic sound and creative voice in her music.
Natasha’s work is constantly evolving – shaped by her inner world, diverse tastes, sense of humour, and musical synaesthesia. She finds comfort in transcending genre boundaries, promising to keep listeners intrigued both on and off the dance floor. As she continues on her path, Ya Girl Natasha remains a figure to watch for those interested in the ever-shifting landscape of Electronic music.
Ya Girl Natasha’s Biography
Meme School is an experimental Electronic and Plunderphonics concept album by Ya Girl Natasha, created during the final years of her music degree. It first came about when she found herself struggling to let go creatively. By opting to not take her music too seriously, she was then able to produce songs in a way that felt true to herself. This opened the gates for Natasha artistically and enabled her to explore her authentic musical voice with total freedom. Containing 11 tracks, Meme School draws heavily from found sounds and pop culture influences, while also journeying into a more ambient, expressive musical realm. All songs on the album are produced and mixed by Natasha and mastered by Rohan Kindt (a.k.a. El Delpha).
